The presidency says former president Nelson Mandela has undergone successful surgery to remove gallstones.

The presidency said the 94-year-old Mandela underwent the surgery on Saturday.

Doctors wanted to treat a recurring lung infection before going ahead with the surgery.

The Presidency’s Spokesperson Mac Maharaj said President Jacob Zuma wished Mandela a speedy recovery, on the behalf of all South Africans.

"We wish once again to appeal for privacy for Madiba” Maharaj added.
