Transport Minister Ben Martins yesterday released preliminary figures from the Road Traffic Management Corporation for a national festive season’s road deaths.
In total, 1221 fatal crashes were
recorded between December
1st 2012 and 8th January 2013 , and an estimated
1 454 people lost their lives during this period.
The main causes of the deaths were
drunk driving, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking, not using seatbelts
and non-roadworthy vehicles.
Democratic Alliance Shadow Deputy
Minister of Transport Greg Krumbock said that there needs to be a shift in
driver attitude in order to improve the situation.
“We need provincial governments to
do their bit to promote road safety; we need education campaigns at schools,
and we need further successful interventions” Krumbock said.
He said that there needed to be a
clamp on corruption in roadworthy testing centres and issuing of licenses.
“We need people to behave like
responsible citizens and not put other people’s lives at risk” he added.
