Duplicates delaying process of late learner placements

Since schools have opened, the Western Cape Education Department has been aware that it could take at least a week to determine where the majority of late learners can be placed.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said one reason for this is because many learners register at more than one school, this then leaves enrolment gaps in the system which can then be filled.

Casey said given these reasons and many others this period can be disruptive in finalising enrolments at schools.

The department is however confident that they can accommodate everyone.

Casey adds that there are roughly between 500 to 700 learners that are looking for places, however the department knows that in these numbers there are duplicates in this figure.

Casey said some parents that have requested assistance from the department have requested assistance from various different districts, this then makes them duplicates in the system.

Casey also said parents that have enrolled their children at a school but are holding out for their first choice schools, so they are still included in that number.
