The Inkhata Freedom Party said a riot at Groenpunt prison this week underlined the urgent need for more prisons.

IFP’s Correctional Services spokesperson Velaphi Ndlovu added that prison officials had failed to contain the situation because they were outnumbered by the inmates at the prison.

Prisoners at Groenpunt started off by refusing to eat on Monday, before setting alight cells and offices, and injuring four warders.

Around 50 inmates were injured when police moved in to stop the riot.

Ndlovu said they are concerned about what has happened at Groenpunt the beginning of this week.

Therefore they are calling on the Minister Ndebele to make sure that the budget for next year, the capital structure of the budget should include building of new correctional centres.
