One dies and 32 left homeless in Cape Town overnight fires

A toddler was killed and 32 people left homeless in overnight fires across Cape Town, a city official said on Saturday.

Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said that the child's father was sleeping in a shack in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, when a fire started on Saturday morning.

“It is believed that the child was playing with matches at the time of the occurance of the fire while his father was asleep” Solomons-Johannes said.

More fires in were reported in Belhar, Du Noon, Gugulethu, Mfuleni and Strand.

Two people were 32 displaced in the blazes, the DRMC came to the aid of those affected by the blaze to distribute building material, food parcels, clothing and blankets.
