Authorities, including the South African Police Services and the Department of higher education, are repeatedly issuing warnings for prospective students to steer clear of bogus colleges and educational scams.

Director of the Independent Institute of Education Dr Felicity Coughlan said with information easily available prescribed formats, it is easy to identify credible institutions and their campuses if learners know what they are looking for.

Since the beginning of the year students have been warned of these bogus colleges, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa and Congress of South African Students have been very vocal in terms of warning students about checking the credibility of a college before they enroll.

Coughlan added that all the information about the registration of an institution is available in the register of Private Higher Education Institutions.
