The
South African Institute of Race Relations yesterday released a report, which
rates the Western Cape highly in terms of
health, education and service delivery.
According to the report, the province’s
performance in crime is not as impressive.
In the report, the nine provinces were
rated according to 125 demographic, economic and social indictors.
Spokesperson for Premier Helen Zille, Zak
Mbhele said that it was unfortunate that the crime situation is a blot on the
picture and drug crimes, which are serious in the province, being higher here than
anywhere in the country; and policing is a national competency.
“The province has limited powers to effect
that, but we do our best through our oversight function to make it work as best
as we can” Mbhele said.
