The Western Cape Department of Education has launched 2013 literacy and innumeracy campaign.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the department’s literacy and numeracy strategy includes careful analysis of test results, teacher training and support, parent and community mobilization and diagnostic testing of learners in Grades 3, 6 and 9.

Casey said while the Department is doing its best to continue to implement appropriate strategies to improve language and mathematic skills of the learners, parents are asked to play their role to help.

“Parents can play a crucial role in supporting their children and their education and; our new campaign is therefore aimed at parents to help children to read, write and practice maths everyday” Casey said.

Casey said that the operation alerts parents to their responsibility to help children develop their language and mathematics skills.
