The African National Congress Women’s League has called for a Commission of Inquiry into the rape and gender based violence.

This call comes after the brutal murder and rape of a 17 year-old girl in Bredasdorp last week.

Women’s Legal Centre said they would support the establishment of that commission, because the rate of women abuse in this country is very high.

WLC Director Jennifer Williams said that they would support the call for an inquiry into the states response to gender based violence and whether we are allocating enough resources to gender based violence.

“What can be done to make sure that women report rape and that their accused are convicted; and sentences are applied to prevent men from taking advantage of a system that has flaws in it” Williams said.
