The Congress of South African Trade Union today said it is totally opposed to the proposal that teachers will not be able to strike as a result of education being declared an essetential service.

The National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union said in a statement that declaring education an essential service will be constitutionally flawed and will be in violation of the International Labour Organisation’s classification of essential services.

Cosatu’s National Spokesperon Patrick Craven said this is just a an attempt to make teachers a scapegoat.

Craven added that Cosatu will fight to the end to prevent this.

The announcement was made by the African National Congress Secretary General Gwede Mantashe at the Luthuli House on Monday.
