The Health Professions Council of South Africa has today expressed concern regard the increase number of sexually related misconduct complaints being laid against doctors.

As from the 1st April up to December, six cases relating to undesirable and inappropriate relationships with patients were settled through a formal investigation stage and penalties were forced on the doctors involved.

HPCSA spokesperson Bertha Scheepers-Peters said that in the past few years there has been an increase in cases that have been reported.
“Obviously the number that has gone to formal inquiry stage has risen over the past few years, and this is alarming” Scheepers-Peters said.
