On Wednesday Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela delivered a key note address at the new Eluxolweni Housing Project in Pearly Beach, Overstrand.

MEC Madikizela said more than 2.3 million households are waiting for houses in South Africa and in the Western Cape it’s over 500 000.

Madikizela added that they only have a budget to build around 15 000 houses a year.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bruce Oom said that due to limited resources, the Department is taking a multi-pronged approach to housing.

“The Department is first making sure that everybody in the province has access to basic services while they are waiting for a house” Oom said.

Oom added that people in informal settlements tend to end up with no services due to political fighting between different political groups.
