On Wednesday
Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela delivered a key
note address at the new Eluxolweni Housing Project in Pearly Beach , Overstrand.
MEC Madikizela said
more than 2.3 million households are waiting for houses in South Africa and in the Western Cape it’s over 500 000.
Madikizela added
that they only have a budget to build around 15 000 houses a year.
Ministerial
Spokesperson Bruce Oom said that due to limited resources, the Department is
taking a multi-pronged approach to housing.
“The Department is
first making sure that everybody in the province has access to basic services
while they are waiting for a house” Oom said.
Oom added that
people in informal settlements tend to end up with no services due to political
fighting between different political groups.
