Pensioners forced to purchase when withdrawing their grants

The MEC of Social Development Albert Fritz said a pensioner raised an issue that pensioners withdrawing their monthly grants at supermarket till points are subjected to minimum purchase conditions.

Fritz said pensioners are already challenged with having to stretch their grant to cover all their living expenses.

He added that pensioners are regularly exploited by loan sharks and predators in their communities.

MEC Albert Fritz Spokesperson Melan Kuhn said this is completely unacceptable and the MEC will be raising the matter with the National Minister of Social Development Bathabile Dlamini to find out what the agreement was, between the retailers and Sassa and whether a provision has made for a minimum purchase condition close.

Kuhn added that big retail should not be joining this practise of exploiting pensioners.
