Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa said the police ministry has developed a strategy to address the underreporting of crime.

This follows a research done by the South Africa Research Council which showed that a total of 1.7 million or 52 percent of crimes committed in South Africa went unreported in 2011.

Ministerial Spokesperson Zweli Mnisi said the ministry has now reviewed some of their training manuals and they have also now begun to increase their duration of training.

Mnisi added that they are now internally focusing on forensic analysis and arm control and highlights that these are things that should be done by station managers, and that is where the issue of command and control should be intensified across the organisation to ensure that confidence is rebuilt when people are affected by crimes and can boldly go to a police station.

“We urge them to come forward and report crimes and from our side we will see that when they do come to a police station that they get satisfactory service,” Mnisi said.
