The Freedom of Expression Institute has expressed worry over what it feels is a government trend to censor freedom of expression.

This comes after the Mbombela Local Municipality removed an artwork of artist Kobus Myburgh from a local art gallery.

The removal of the piece was requested by African National Congress official.

FXI’s Phenyo Butale said they believe that artists should be celebrated not and not denigrated like they were in apartheid.

“We believe that the removal of the paintings by the Mbombela Municipality might amount to censorship, and that is against artistic expression which is enshrined in our constitution” Butale added.

Butale also said that they will be engaging the municipality to find out the reasons behind the removal of the art.
