The South African Municpal Workers Union today said ordinary South Africans should join hands with unions in calling an end to e-tolling.

Samwu said the pressure of the masses is crucial in forcing government to back down on implementing e-tolls.

Samwu Spokesperson Tahir Sema said the e-tolling system will soon be spreading to all parts of the country and it is something that should not be taken lightly.

He added that the the privatisation of resources in a form of roads is something that is worth fighting for.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance said it recognizes the need for funding to be sought to help eliminate the country’s road maintenance backlog, but wholesale erection of toll roads is not the solution.

This follows after the South African National Roads Agency Spokesperson Vusi Mona said Sanral is currently considering building five new toll roads.

DA MP of Transport Ian Ollis said the DA remains concerned, because the future direction of Sanral seems like its to be build more toll roads.
