The Western Cape Human Settlements Department has announced that tomorrow it will forcefully remove about five house holds in informal settlements in Joe Slovo, Langa.

The department has been engaging with the community since last year about their removal, because there is a plan to build about 2 639 houses in the area but the residents in the five house holds refused to move to another area.

MEC for Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela said 588 units have been built but the remaining 2051 units can not be built because the residents are blocking the area.

MEC Spokesperson Bruce Oom explains that they will enforce a court order for the relocation of these 5 informal dwellings, because they are blocking the housing development, which will ultimately benefit thousands of families.

Oom added that these 5 households have previously agreed to relocate so that the development of the next 2 000 units can continue, but they haven’t honored their agreement to move.

“Unfortunately the department has had to take the decision to enforce the relocation, with the use of SAPS and the court sheriff,” said Oom.
