The Congress of South African Trade Unions said it is shocked at the latest Stats SA Quarterly Labour Force Survey which showed that unemployed persons increased by 100 000 people to 4.6 million between 2012 and 2013.

Cosatu said it believes that in order to create a sufficient number of sustainable new jobs, government will need to show that is forging ahead with practical implementation and enough resourcing of the Industrial Policy Action Plan.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said the latest figures shows how far they are from achieving the target they set some time ago.

Craven added that this point the urgency to tackle this problem.
