The Congress of South African Trade Union has welcomed the prosecution of colluding constructions firms.

Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel announced in Parliament that the construction companies guilty of collusion in the awarding of contracts face fines running into billions of rands.

Cosatu says the root of corruption lie in the private sector.

Cosatu Spokesperson Patrick Craven said Cosatu is often accused of being opposed to the system of a free enterprise and free competition, but their argument is that much of society is not dominated by the free market but is filled with monopolies and cartels.

“We have had cases of collusion and price fixing in the bread, dairy, pharmaceutical and milling industries; the Minister has announced investigations into the private health sector and the glass industry” Craven added.

Craven also said clearly a problem existed.
