The National Sea Rescue Institute and the volunteer crew in Durban on Saturday afternoon were activated following a report of small boat that was experiencing difficulty.

The small boat had two men on board and it was paddling towards the tanker off-shore of Umhlanga and they appeared to be giving clear signaling indications that they were in some form of distress.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said they informed Durban's Port Control that they had intercepted the VHF radio message and then launched a sea rescue craft MEGAN II and responded to the location, off-shore of Umhlanga.

Lambinon further said where we found the 5 meter rubber-duck SILVER TIP with Quentin van der Mescht, 34 years old, and Gustav Keet, 65 years old, both from Kingburgh, South of Durban.

He added that they had a suspected flat battery and were unable to start their motor.
