The City of Cape Town is calling on Minister of Police Nathi Mthethwa to reconsider the green paper on proposal to incorporate the Metro Police into the South African Police Service.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said the minister has been purely advised regarding the green paper.

Smith said the Metro police provides a significant role to the SAPS and also plays a role in fighting crime.

Smith further said the City by-law and other law enforcement agencies will suffer as a result of this and the City officials have written to the police Minister and the Institute for Security Studies in opposing the idea.
