The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape said on Thursday that 1 049 schools in the province do not have proper toilet facilities.

DA Provincial Education Spokesperson Edmund van Vuuren said this is a human violation on an unprecedented scale, with an estimated 260 000 children in the province attend a school each day without proper sanitation facilities.

“Children have to relive themselves in the bushes or in open spaces.” van Vuuren added

Van Vuuren also this shocking neglect from the Education Department undermines the dignity of hundreds of thousands of children attending public schools in the Eastern Cape everyday.
