Western Cape MEC of Community Safety Dan Plato said that police are failing to arrest criminals.

This follows an incident whereby a group supporting the 183 individuals arrested for illegal protests stole from and assaulted a business vendor on the Grand Parade.

During the incident police failed to make any arrests.

MEC Plato said that the complaint is about the fact that police told people them they must first go and lay a charge at the nearest police station before the police can take the necessary action.

“That is wrong my taking is if a crime is happening right there on the spot, in the presence of SAPS members they have an obligation to act and they have an obligation to assist the public and to make an immediate arrest,” Plato added.

He furthermore said that he hopes that if that can happen that more criminals could then be arrested and be brought to book.
