Today the Western Cape MEC of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism Alan Winde launched the Western Cape Government’s single biggest intervention.

This is to address the serious shortage of artisans in the country.  Winde said in South Africa we need to be producing about 50 000 artisans a year to prepare ourselves for the economy.

Winde said on Monday they were part of a programme where they launched, where they want to bring 200 people to start with, young people who want to learn an artisan trade in partnership with businesses.

“Young people get an opportunity to work with businesses, in businesses and then pick up that trade of theirs and that is the away that we will be able to the need for our economy going forward, fill that gap,” added Winde.

He also said that if that gap is not filled companies will then import those skills and that can’t be done given that there are so many people who are in need of opportunities.
