17 drunk drivers arrested over weekend blitz in the Western Cape

The Western Cape Traffic Authorities held 24 roadblocks over the weekend throughout the province.

Western Cape Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said they stopped and tested about 2 768 vehicles in these roadbolocks.

Africa said 1 333 drivers were tested for alcohol and 17 of them were arrested for drunk driving.

Africa said there was also one arrest for a stolen vehicle and one person for being in possession of mandrax. The total amount of fines issued was R 2 23 830-00. The highest speed reading was recorded im Paarl.

Meanwhile the number fatalities in the province over the weekend stand at five.

Five people died in separate accidents which occurred in various areas around the province.  

Africa said the roadblocks have helped to decrease the number of fatalities on the road.
