The Congress of the People Youth Movement has welcomed the compensation settlements for the silicosis stricken miners.

The COPEYM said the settlement by Anglo American with former miners who contracted silicosis while under the employment of Anglo American needs to be applauded because these people suffered and some they are still suffering.

COPEYM Spokesperson Bongani Mahlangu said the settlement might not be applicable to all who have claimed but will surely improve the working conditions in which our miners find themselves in.

“With many young people flocking to the mines looking for work to feed themselves and their families, mining companies will think twice before exposing and harming the health lives of our people with a purpose of making huge profits from cheap South African labour force and unsafe mining practices,” Mahlangu added.
