The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, the Hawks, have confirmed that it is investigating allegations of criminal conduct surrounding the allocation of mining rights at the Gold Fields South Deep mine involving ANC Chairperson, Baleka Mbete.

This follows the DA’s request for an investigation under the Prevention and Combatting of corrupt Activities Act, Act 12 of 2004.

Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Mineral Resources James Lorimer said the DA welcomes the willingness of the Hawks to investigate the serious concerns about misconduct as well as the allegations of corruption and exertion of undue influence in awarding mining licenses.

“She tried to threatened Gold Fields Company that they would not get a mining license unless she gets huge a large number of shares in their empowerment scheme,” Lorimer added.
