Heavy fines to be issued to motorists who use the bus lanes

The City of Cape Town and the Western Cape provincial government transport department have been working on ensuring that the bus lanes and transport lanes around the city are used only for public transport vehicles.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said one of the key problem areas has been the bus lanes on the N2 whereby motorists are using the lanes.

Smith said the reinstatement of the cameras on the N2 will hopefully drive down the level of non-compliance.  A large number of motorists are using that bus lane and we hoping with the cameras motorists who get fines will change their behaviour.

“The fines which previously would only infrequently be recorded against offenders, will now not be easy to escape as the cameras will be catching them daily” Smith added.
