A massive search was launched on the Amanzimtoti main beach today after public reported that they witnessed a motorized paraglider plunging into the ocean this morning.

The exact detail to the incident is still sketchy and will remain a subject for police investigation.

Netcare 911 Spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and Police search and rescue arrived at the scene and after a briefing with the witness, two police divers were placed on the S A P air wing helicopter and started to conduct an aerial search for the missing paraglider.

Botha said a short while later a second helicopter from the red cross joined the search, divers spotted an object just below the surface of the water and launched one of the divers to investigate, after retrieving the object it was found that it was two large pieces of plastic drifting with the current.

“The diver was then attached to a long line under the helicopter and flown back to shore. After several hours, police decided to call off the search” added Botha.
