City of Cape Town ’s Disaster Risk Management said a seven-year-old boy drowned in
Melkbosstrand when he was swept out to sea by rip currents and disappeared
beneath the surf on Monday.
Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomon Johannes said it
is believed that the boy was swimming with a friend unsupervised.
The boys were on an excursion with friends and neighbours.
Somolons-Johannes said it is alleged that the boy was with his 10
year-old friend at the time of his drowning.
Somolons-Johannes said police divers, National Sea Rescue Institute crew
responded to the call and started with the search. The body of the boy was
discovered after hours of searching.
He added that the family of the boy was receiving counselling.
