The City of Cape Town is continuing to focus on the key drivers of road fatalities which include speeding, alcohol, following distance, safety belts and distracter driving. So far 1 600 cellphones have been confiscated from motorists in the city.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith said it is important to curb road deaths in the province and one way of doing that paying more attention on the road while driving.

“its important that we bring down the distracter driving figures to ensure that we drive down that fatality rate and kept only on the city in the country, that has successfully over the last years driven our death toll on our roads down and the focus on the distracter driving and cellphone has been part of that.

At the moment we are impounding cell phone continuously and we ask the motorists not to use cellphones while they are driving,” Smith added
