The National Sea Rescue Institute in Strandfontein and volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority on Sunday afternoon following reports of 5 people in difficulty while swimming in the surf at Mnandi Beach, on the False Bay coast.

NSRI Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said Western Province Surf Lifesaving lifeguards had initiated a rescue to assist the 5 people while NSRI Strandfontein responded to a sea rescue vehicle and launched a sea rescue craft and the WC Government Health EMS, the Skymed rescue helicopter, SA Police Services, Law Enforcement, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services and Cape Town Traffic Services and a Police Dive Unit responded.

Lambinon said four males were rescued from the water aged between 18 and 22 but one male, an 18 year old from Crossroads, was missing.

He further said while an extensive sea, air and shore search commenced investigations were conducted to try to determine if the teenager had in fact left the water and gone home without informing anyone but all efforts to find the teenager were unsuccessful and during the search the body of the teenager was found washed up in shallow surf and the body was recovered, declared deceased, and handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology services.

The four men that were rescued had not injuries and the police are investigating the incident.
