Two men appeared in the Beaufort-West Magistrate Court on Monday in connection with the illegal possession of abalone worth R1 million.

The two were remanded in custody and are expected to make another court appearance on the 25th of November for a formal bail application.

Southern Cape Police Spokesperson Malcolm Pojie said members of the Western Cape Provincial Rural Flying Squad spotted their vehicle, they were travelling on the N-1 through Beaufort-West to Johannesburg.

“With the search they did they found 6648 abalone concealed in 67 bags inside the cab of the kombi,” Pojie added.
