A 50-year-old teacher has been sentenced to three life terms in prison after he was found guilty of rape by the Empangeni Regional Court.

It is believed the teacher identified as Nkosingiphile Hlekwayo repeatedly raped an 11-year-old grade six learner.

Colonel Jay Naicker said the matter was reported to the police in August 2009 and a case was opened. The Empangeni Family Violence Child Protection Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation that led to the arrest of the accused on the same day the offence was reported.

Naicker added that the victim’s family was threatened by the accused family and the child was then placed in a place of safety until the case was finalised.
