Two separate accidents leave 16 people injured

ER24 paramedics late last night responded to a motor vehicle collision on Bellair Road in Durban. 

It is believed that a light motor goods vehicle veered off the road and came to rest nearby a canal leaving the driver trapped inside. 

ER24 Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said when paramedics arrived they found the man inside the vehicle and heavy rescue equipment and the Jaws of Life had to be used to free the man from the wreckage.

Vermaak said the man sustained a few fractures; one of them was a fractured leg.  He was later transported to hospital for further care.

In another accident 15 people were left injured in a taxi accident in Malibongwe Drive on Monday. 

ER24 Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said the driver of the taxi lost control and collided with a cement pillar before overturning several times and landing on its roof into on coming traffic. 

Vermaak said when paramedics arrived on the scene all the occupants of the vehicle were sitting outside of the taxi and some of them on the nearby pavement.

“All the occupants sustained moderate to minor injuries and they were all later taken to hospital” Vermaak added.
