An ER24 paramedic was this afternoon stabbed eight times in an attempted hijacking in Vereeniging.  It is believed the paramedic Ryno Strydom was off-duty when he noticed a man lying in the middle of the road.

He stopped to assist the man but out of nowhere two men came running and pulled the paramedic to the side of the road and stabbed him in the chest, throat, back and legs.

ER24 Spokesperson Luyanda Majija said the men searched Strydom and took his wallet, watch and cellphone before stabbing him.  The paramedic then struggled his way back to the road where he got back into his car and drove to the ER24 base.

Majija said when Strydom got to the base he collapsed and because he was bleeding profusely pressure was immediately applied to his wounds.

“He is currently being treated at the Mediclinic Emfuleni and he is in a stable condition”.
