The African National Congress in the Western Cape welcomed the
conviction of six members of the 28’s gang found guilty on three counts
including murder and attempted murder.
ANC Spokesperson on Community Safety
Dorothea Gopie said MEC Dan Plato is a close acquaintance of 28’s gang leader
Saliem John.
Gopie said the verdict proves that MEC
Plato was wrong on his opinion on gangs.
The MEC has been denying all along the involvement of some people in the
gang wars that is happening in the province.
In response MEC Dan Plato’s Spokesperson
Greg Wagner said MEC Plato welcomes the arrests and verdict of the 28’s gang
and that he will not stop his work to get rid of gangs in the province.
Wagner said MEC Plato will continue to
engage the youth at risk in many of the gang areas in the province in order to
them into FET colleges.
“MEC Plato said with every youth that
chooses an education over a life of crime that would be one less criminal on
our streets” Wagner added.
