The South African Communist Party said it is disappointed at the decision by the Department of Health in the Western Cape to not afford students in the province the opportunity to study medicine in Cuba.

In a statement the SACP Provincial Spokesperson Masonwabe Sokoyi said MEC Theuns Botha is of the belief that the universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town are capable enough to provide sufficient doctors to the Western Cape, as if the province is an independent state.

The reason why South Africa sends students in Cuba is to try and produce as many doctors as possible so that they can respond on the many challenges facing our country particularly on the poor communities.

The SACP in the province is calling upon both the Department of Higher Education and Training and the Department of Health to immediately intervene and ensure that the Western Cape routinely and ritually sends students to Cuba.
