During the City of Cape Town’s Scholar Transport Operation on Thursday resulted in two drivers being arrested and eight vehicles being impounded at Zonnebloem.

During the operation several vehicles transporting school children were stopped and checked for roadworthiness, appropriate documentation and suitability to operate as scholar transport.

MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said there is still a long way to go in ensuring that scholars are safely transported to and from school.

Ministerial Spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said what we witness were a lot of vehicles that were either not roadworthy or had various defects rendering them unsafe to transport children.

“Over and above that eight of those vehicles were impounded for operating without their operating licenses and this is telling of a very gloomy picture that still exists amongst scholar transport in the Metro,” Dube added.
