South Africa’s population surpasses the 63 million mark

South Africa’s population has exceeded the 63 million mark, according to the latest mid-year population estimates for 2024. Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) released the Mid-Year Population Estimates (MYPE) on Tuesday. PICTURE: StatsSA The data shows that the country’s population grew by approximately 835 513 individuals, marking a 1.33% increase from July 2023 to July 2024. The Chief Director for Demographic and Population Statistics, Diego Iturralde, said over half of the population is female, totalling around 32 million. Provincially, Gauteng remains the most populous with nearly 16 million residents. KwaZulu-Natal follows with a population of 12.3 million. “Together, these two provinces account for about 45% of South Africa’s total population. In contrast, Northern Cape is the least populated province, housing just under 1.4 million people," said Iturralde. Outrage at pornographic Cape Town facebook page

Lusanda Bill 13 March 2013 A Facebook page titled “Exposing Young Cape Town Girls” has caused outrage. The page shows graphic pictures of young girls and woman naked and in disturbing positions. Activists Network against the Exploitation of Children, Anti Child Labour Programme Coordinator, Doreen Gaura said they are shocked and disturbed by the pictures. Gaura said it is worrying that social networking platforms do not have any kind of restrictions and safeguards around these issues. Housing Crisis Ignored: Good Party Slams Provincial Government's Plan for Tafelberg Site

The Good Party in the Western Cape criticised the provincial government’s decision to use part of the Tafelberg School site for social services. The government wants to use the school building for social services for disabled or elderly people. This is according to Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers. Premier Alan Winde, however, said that his administration would make the site available for affordable housing six years ago. Good’s Secretary General, Brett Herron, says Winde has since gone back on this promise. “Studies have shown that the site is viable for affordable housing when the school building is included. If the school building is excluded, the remainder of the site may still be viable for affordable housing” said Herron.
