The Women’s Legal Centre said it is concerned about the under representation of women in the judiciary.

WLC Spokesperson Jennifer Williams said stats show that females make up 51.3% of South Africa’s population but out of the 239 judges only 76 are women.

Williams said in order to reflect the gender demographics of the country the number of women judges would have to increase by at least 20%.

“Women’s rights organizations that are working in the legal sector are very concerned about the lack of women judges in the country.  The President referred to this in his State of the Nation Address as a cause for concern, and we are aware that the judiciary is currently advertising positions” Williams added.

The Women’s Legal Centre has called on the Judicial Services Commission to ensure that they priorities the short listing of women so that the under representation of women can be addressed immediately.
