19 drunk drivers arrested during roadblocks in the WC

Western Cape Traffic Authorities this weekend arrested 19 drunken drivers during their 24 roadblocks of which 1 272 drivers were tested for alcohol.

The highest reading recorded was in Somerset West on the N2.  Two drivers were also arrested for speeding in Helderberg and in Mossel Bay. 

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said one person was also arrested for failing to give information to a traffic officer in Oudstoorn.  Fines of R223 200 were issued and tested the speed of 7 207 vehicles.  672 drivers were prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.

Meanwhile two Roadlink buses were also impounded during the roadblocks one in Beaufort West and the other in Worcester.

Both vehicles were found to be unroadworthy and did not have the proper documentation. Both drivers are expected to appear in court soon. 

On the other hand five people died on Western Cape roads over the weekend. 

Africa said three of them were pedestrian.  A bad accident happened on Saturday where two vehicles collided into each and both drivers of the vehicles died in the accident.
