Due to a critical shortage of highly skilled technicians in the country Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle back in 2009 revived the Bellville Mechanical Workshop apprentice training scheme.

The training is highly technical and focuses on basic mechanic fundamentals.

Since 2008, 27 apprentices have been trained.  Ministerial spokesperson Siphesihle Dube said eight new mechanics completed the programme and are set to enter into skilled artisans scheme.

“The programme itself is allocated R1.25 million per year and since 2008 has trained 27 apprentices and with eight joining later this month” Dube added.
