Minister of Science and Technology Derek Hanekom has welcomed the contribution of R1.7 billion made by United Kingdom Minister David Willetts to the Square Kilometre Array Project.

Hanekom said the contribution is important because it provides for the implementation of Phase one of the SKA to begin.

Departmental Spokesperson Tommy Makhode said this donation demonstrates a commitment by countries and hopefully more countries will come on-board.

"Already South African has contributed close to R4 million with regards to the construction of the SKA.  The project is a global scientific enterprise to build one of the largest scientific instruments ever envisaged” Makhode added.
