The Western Cape Department of
Education has confirmed that four teachers as from next week be teaching IsXhosa
in Grade 1 in ten schools in the province.
This is part of the Department of
Basic Education’s African Language Pilot Project.
WCED’s Paddy Attwell said a fifth
teacher will be employed next week and the teachers will be visiting two to three schools.
Attwell added that the teachers also
met stuff and learners at the participating schools. The schools have also
opted to extend the school day to accommodate the lesson probably by half an
hour a day.
“The participating schools have
respondent enthusiastically to the pilot at all levels and appreciate the
support of our project team. The Grade 1 teacher’s confirmed that they are
looking forward to learning isiXhosa as well as with their learners.” Attwell
added.
