Sonke Gender Justice calls for decriminalization of sex work

Sonke Gender Justice together with several organizations have called on the South African Law Reform Commission to urgently recommend the decriminalization of sex workers. 
 
Sonke Gender Justice’s Sally Shackleton said gender based violence is an injustice that affects many women and girls world wild with South Africa recording some of the highest rates of sexual violence. 
 
Shackleton said this case was just one of the cases that go to court.
 
She added that sex workers need protection not be prosecuted.
 
This comes after Convicted double murderer Johannes de Jager has been sentenced to life behind bars. He was found guilty of killing and cutting up the body of 16-year-old Charmaine Mare in Cape Town last year.
