The Congress of South African Trade Union has welcomed the platinum strike settlement.

Cosatu National Spokesperson Patrick Craven said they do however condemn the violence and intimidation which took place during the five month prolonged strike.

Platinum producers Anglo, Impala and Lonmin and union Amcu signed a wage deal on Tuesday evening.

Craven said the amounts involved in the settlement are a vindication that the mines were made which was in line with Cosatu’s own view this is to water a decent wage is particularly for the kind of dangerous and unhealthy work that mineworkers do is entirely justified.

“This will strengthen our campaign for a decent living wage for all workers and in particular for a national minimum wage for the poorest of the workers so that we can bring workers out of poverty,” Craven added.
