Metrorail in the Western Cape said it has no option but to increase ticket fares in order to improve its services.

Metrorail Spokesperson Riana Scott said they are aware that most of the commuters are economically strained, but that is why cost effective measures have been introduced when increasing prices.

Scott said this is an annual increase and it is nationally. We must also stress that if we do not levy the fare increase we will have to think about cutting services. People know that we run on electricity and we busy with major upgrading processes.

“Most of our components are important and these exchange rates are not in our favor. So for us to just to sustain the current services levels which people know it not what we want, we need more money so the fare increases is really necessary it will blow inflation and we consider it reasonable and it will allow us to continue improving services.” Scott added.
