The Congress of South African Trade Union in the Western Cape said negotiations with Metrorail have failed and therefore strike action will happen this month.

Cosatu’s Tony Ehrenreich said the amount Metrorail will gain from fare increases is R3 million for the month of July which is a small amount for Metrorail but huge for ordinary workers.

Metrorail will be increasing fares between 3 and 4-Rand as of the 1st of July.

Ehrenreich said the union will be protesting against the company’s bad service in the sense that workers arrive late at work on days of delays and cancellations. Communities lose money when on these days because Metrorail does not provide alternative transport and the commuters are forced to use extra money.

He added that this fare increase is not the right thing to do and that is why workers will be embark on a protected march on the 24 of June 2014.
