The South African Municipal Workers Union
in the Eastern Cape said the arrest of
Executive Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Speaker and Senior Officials undermines the
union’s contribution in liberating the country and good governance.
The mayor and her officials were arrested
for fraud relating to illegal payments made from the money that was meant for
Former President Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.
Samwu Provincial Spokesperson Siphiwo Ndunyana
said the money that was used by corrupt people should have been used to better
off the poor communities rather than it goes to individual hands.
Five city officials were arrested and
released on R10,000 bail each on Monday after an investigation by the Hawks
alleged they had used the funeral to channel government money to their friends.
